When it's already getting a bit chilly here, you can often still enjoy warm temperatures in the southern regions of Italy. On this trip, we experience the mild autumn in the most beautiful places in Italy. The journey - which, as we all know, is the destination - takes us via the Eternal City of Rome to the Gulf of Naples. We visit the buried city of Pompei and climb the crater of the still active Mount Vesuvius. We take a boat to the picturesque island of Capri. It is definitely worth visiting this beautiful region after the onslaught of mass tourism.
Arrival day - we take the direct route to Rome and already today we will encounter many beautiful landscapes and get in the mood for our days in Italy. Check in to the very good **** Hotel Abitart, a design hotel in the heart of the Ostiense district in the immediate vicinity of Ostiense railway and underground station. Dinner at the hotel.
Today we go on a full-day city tour of ‘Ancient Rome’ with our tour guide. We will see the majestic Colosseum, the Palatine Hill and the impressive Roman Forum (outside visits). In the afternoon, we stroll through Rome's historic centre and discover buildings from different eras such as Piazza Navona with the Fountain of the Four Rivers, the Pantheon, Piazza di Spagna with the Spanish Steps and, of course, the Trevi Fountain. There is always a colourful hustle and bustle here, because anyone who wants to see Rome again (and everyone does) throws a coin into the ornate baroque fountain. Optional lunch en route, dinner at the hotel.
In the morning we visit ‘Christian Rome’ with St Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums with the Sistine Chapel. Afterwards we drive to a catacomb A visit to the catacombs is like travelling back in time. Experience the history of Rome in a special way and let yourself be mesmerised by the mystical atmosphere of this subterranean world. The afternoon is at leisure in Rome.
After breakfast, we leave Rome and travel to the Alban Hills. There we will visit the palace of Castel Gandolfo with its secret gardens - the former summer residence of the Pope. Of course, we will taste the famous Frascati wine in a typical rustic cantina, accompanied by regional specialities. In the afternoon, we continue our journey inland towards Naples. In Castellammare di Stabia, we check into our rooms in a **** hotel for three nights. This hotel combines the charm of bygone times with modern design and is located directly on the promenade and coast. The luxurious hotel also has a unique restaurant where you can enjoy not only delicious dishes but also an impressive view of the sea.
Now we can look forward to a leisurely boat trip to Capri. On a tour of the island by minibus, we get to know the most beautiful corners of the island. We visit the magnificent Villa San Michele in Anacapri and the Augustus Gardens. Then we enjoy the marvellous views and the luxurious ambience of this unique island over a delicious pizza. Return to the mainland by boat in the evening. Dinner at the hotel.
Today we go on an excursion to the Amalfi Coast and discover one of the most famous and popular stretches of coastline in the world. We are treated to breathtaking views of steep cliffs and secluded bays. We disembark in Positano and stroll through this picturesque town with its narrow streets and rocky beaches. How about a plate of pasta or some freshly caught fish? In the afternoon, we are greeted from afar by colourful houses nestled against dramatic coastlines. AMALFI - it's worth visiting the Byzantine cathedral and strolling through the charming old town. In the evening we return to the hotel for dinner.
Before we leave this charming region, we take an exciting city tour of Naples. We now travel northwards past Rome to the coast and on to the Viareggio region for our last overnight stay. Dinner at the hotel.
Our return journey to Switzerland takes us past La Spezia - Parma - Milan - Gotthard, to the Olten region.
